For Clubs & Societies

I provide a range of interesting & varied talks and workshops on photography & art for Camera Clubs & Societies, Art, Textile, & Craft Groups, U3A, WI. These can also be adapted for students studying at schools, colleges & universities. Each talk lasts approximately 2 hours with a short break. Costs are £70 per talk (plus mileage 0.45p/mile from Burnham-on-Crouch). Workshop costs vary depending on the number of people & materials/equipment needed.

Iceland in a Campervan

I cannot begin to explain how I feel about Iceland, breathing in the fresh air on top of a glacier makes you feel alive and in the moment. Climbing waterfalls, standing between two tectonic plates, descending into an ice cave or lying on the floor looking up to a ceiling of basalt columns. My talk, illustrated with photographs, will take you on a visual journey into the power of nature during my road trip around Iceland.

You Can’t See the Trees for the Woods

Talk about my one year artist residency in Epping Forest funded by Arts Council England. Includes quirky ancient trees, documentary photography, colourful landscapes, & photo montages. I went 100 feet up with the Conservation Arborists, studied woodland ecology with the Field Studies Council, joined walking groups, conservation volunteers a mycologist and naturalist. Images from this project achieved 2nd place in an IGPOTY category & an RHS Silver Gilt Medal.

Botanical Studio Photography

Learn how to create stunning close-up images of plants, seed heads and other botanical subjects in a simple indoor studio that you can recreate at home using minimal equipment. The talk will start with inspiration from past and present botanical photographers and then different studio set ups and how to set up your camera for close-up and macro photography. Get creative with lighting, backgrounds, viewpoint, composition and colour.

Plant Photography Using Smartphones & Tablets

Illustrated Talk – Presentation on smartphone photography which includes finding inspiration, common pitfalls, setting up an image, viewpoint, composition, light & colour, editing and saving images for websites and social media.

2 Hour Practical Session Indoors – This session focusses on setting up a simple indoor studio set up with affordable lighting and background options. We will look at viewpoint, composition, light and colour schemes. Suitable for creative photography of plants, products and artwork.

2 Hour Practical Session Outdoors – This session focusses on viewpoint, composition and using natural light to its best effect. Suitable for photographing gardens & plants, product photography and artwork.

Cyanotype Sun Printing

Learn about an alternative photographic process called Cyanotype which was invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel. I will tell you how I use this process to create images of plants in both a traditional & contemporary way using iron salts and the sun.

Botanical Art & Photography

I work in many different mediums including photography, cyanotype, glass, plant pressing & print making I so can tailor the talk according to your interest group.

A Year as an Herbarium Plant Collector

I have been pressing plants & flowers for many years and recently spent a wonderful year as a volunteer Herbarium Plant Collector for the Royal Horticultural Society at Hyde Hall. Learn about the process and what this entailed. I will also tell you about the tips and tricks I have learn’t over the years on pressing plants for my art & photography projects.
